Following the phenomenal success of “Wordle,” a word game that The New York Times purchased for a low seven-figure sum in January 2022, the paper released “Connections” in 2023. The game has already garnered a devoted following across the English-speaking world, with some players sharing hints and results on social media every day.
How to play Connections
The goal of Connections is to divide an initial set of 16 words into four categories based on common characteristics.
Players choose four words at a time, and if they link together to form one of four categories, letters light up and are removed from the board.
Each of the four categories is color-coded to indicate difficulty, with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple.
Once you connect four words correctly, their colour will be revealed, showing you how difficult the quiz creators considered that part of the puzzle to be.
There is no time limit, but players can only make four mistakes before the game ends, or they lose.
Players can shuffle the board at any time, which will randomly rearrange the 16 words.
Sometimes a word may seem to belong to more than one category, but there is always only one correct answer.
Connections editor Wyna Liu advises that if you have five cards that seem to belong in the same category, your best bet is to move them to a different category and see if you can remove some of the words.

“That might take one of the extra cards out of the competition, or at least take a few cards off the board and make other categories easier to see,” she said.
