Daily Wordle Tips
I’ve written a lot about Wordle, from introducing your 1,000th word to lists of the best words for beginners, helpful two-step strategies, and news about controversial word changes. I’ve also compiled what I’ve learned from a year of playing the popular online word puzzler. If you’re having second thoughts about whether you need real answers, you might want to try out some of the tips in these articles.
Still need a first word? Someone said to just look around and pick any 5 letter object you find as your first word, like COUCH or CHAIR. I tend to stick to first words with letters that are commonly used in English words. I like TRAIN as my first word, but some friends use TRAIL. I’ve read that some people use the financial term ROATE, but I like to use words I actually know.
What is Wordle?
If you’ve read this far, you already know how to play. You have six chances to guess the five-letter word, and the game gives you feedback on whether the letter you guessed is in the puzzle and in the same place as you guessed it. The New York Times bought the game from creator Josh Wardle in 2022 for a seven-figure sum. Wardle famously created the game for his partner, having her narrow down 12,000 five-letter words in the English language to 2,500 and create a database of answers. It was also convenient that his name was a play on “word.”
A Times spokesperson said the paper’s first Wardle appearance was on June 19, 2021, and that the paper celebrated the game’s 1,000th word on March 15. Spoiler alert: That 1,000th word was ERUPT, which means “If Wardle is too strong and we miss the winning streak, Dad will be furious.”
Times Games has other fun games too. My latest obsession is Connections, which I think is harder than Wordle. It involves looking at a grid of 16 words and sorting them into four groups of related words. Sometimes the relationships between the words are pretty wacky, like when there were four words that all started with rock bands, like “Rushmore” and “journeyman.” (Connections got a bit cheeky on April Fool’s Day with an emoji-only puzzle, which some gamers didn’t think was funny.)

Spelling Bee is another popular game at Times, and there’s a new game still in beta called “Strands” that we’re trying to master.
