Zimbabwe has expressed interest in hosting this year’s Women’s T20 World Cup, originally scheduled to be held in Bangladesh from October 3 to 20. But the tournament is likely to be shifted from Bangladesh due to anti-government protests and growing security concerns in the country.
As per a report by ESPNCricinfo, besides Zimbabwe, the United Arab Emirates is also being considered to host the flagship event. A few days ago, the BCCI confirmed that India has withdrawn from hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup. India is set to host the Women’s ODI World Cup next year.
“Next year we will have the 50-over Women’s World Cup. We don’t want to send a signal that we want to have back-to-back World Cups,” BCCI secretary-general Jay Shah told The Times of India.
Zimbabwe hosted the ICC ODI World Cup Qualifiers in 2018 and 2023. The last time Zimbabwe hosted a World Cup was in 2003, when it co-hosted with South Africa and Kenya. Since then, Zimbabwe has rarely participated in major international tournaments due to political and economic issues.
The Zimbabwean women’s cricket team has never participated in a World Cup before and will not take part in the next tournament, even if the country hosts. Zimbabwe has two major cricket stadiums: Harare Sports Club in Harare and Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. New floodlights have been installed at the Harare Sports Club.
Besides these two venues, Takasinga Sports Club and Bulawayo Athletic Club also streamed live matches for the 2023 ODI World Cup, while two other stadiums hosted televised matches.
Zimbabwe is set to host the U-19 World Cup in 2026 and will co-host the 2027 ODI World Cup along with South Africa and Namibia.
