YouTube frequently changes its design, some of which make sense, others that are a bit confusing. Recently, YouTube has been testing a new design for its Android app, which includes a bottom bar similar to the iPhone’s, updated home and subscription icons, and a see-through bar that shows what’s behind them. It also added a new bell icon to the YouTube Music app and a redesigned artist page.
Now, users are noticing another small change: an adjustment to the video progress bar. Typically, this bar indicates the length of the video, with the red portion indicating the portion you’ve watched. Previously, the entire bar was red, including the portion you hadn’t watched yet. There was also a time when the red color indicated the portion of the video that was loading or buffered.

But now, it appears YouTube is experimenting with a progress bar that starts out red and fades to pink as the video nears its end. This doesn’t change how YouTube works, but it’s a noticeable difference that people are starting to notice.
This new progress bar has been observed on mobile devices and on the web by both premium and non-premium users. YouTube has not officially announced this change, and users are not running any extensions or add-ons that could cause this change. Some have noticed this change for months, while others have only noticed it recently.
It’s not entirely clear why this change is being made; it could be a simple design update for a better look, the transition from red to pink is smooth, and maybe the pink gives a sense of calm and completion when the video ends.
It’s important to note that while some users are seeing the new design, it’s not yet widespread, so it’s unclear whether the red-to-pink progress bar will be a permanent feature for all users or if it’s just an experiment that YouTube is trying.
In my opinion, the red-to-pink progress bar is a subtle yet nice visual change that adds a bit of freshness to the YouTube experience. However, since it doesn’t really improve functionality, I wonder if it’s necessary or if it’s just a cosmetic tweak that not everyone will like. View full bio
