YouTube users can now include video timestamps when sharing links from their mobile apps. For now, users can only adjust the sharing timestamp by manually scrubbing the video timeline.
YouTube is a leading video streaming platform that offers vlogs, documentaries, shorts, tutorials, and more. For many years, the desktop website has allowed users to share a specific timestamp when copying the URL of a YouTube video. This allows visitors of the link to watch the shared video from the specified timestamp instead of from the beginning. To accommodate smartphone users, YouTube is now rolling out support for timestamp sharing to its mobile apps.
As reported by 9to5Google, the mobile version of YouTube now lets you add a timestamp when sharing videos from the app. Upon hitting the share button, a new toggle allows users to automatically add a timestamp to the URL.
Unlike the desktop version, YouTube mobile doesn’t support manually entering a timestamp. Instead, the app automatically shares your current position in the video. So if you want to tweak the timestamp before sharing, you’ll need to manually scrub through the video’s timeline and change the value.
Still, this is a welcome addition to YouTube mobile, as it removes the need for smartphone users to manually add timestamps to video links. Prior to the automatic implementation, users had to copy the link and then type “&t=1m30s” to link to, say, the 1:30 timestamp of a video. Users who aren’t happy with timeline scrubbing can still tweak the timestamp as needed by editing the aforementioned value at the end of the URL.
Please note that this additional feature is not yet available to all YouTube mobile users, so if you can’t find it on your device, try updating the YouTube app to the latest version and clearing your cache.
