X, the social network formerly known as Twitter, recently turned on a setting that allows it to train its Grok AI model with users’ tweets, making users opt-in by default without notifying them about the change.
When this setting is enabled (default), the social network will be able to use all of X’s posts, replies, inputs, and results to train and fine-tune X’s owner Elon Musk’s Grok AI model.
To continually improve your experience, we may use your X-contributions and user interactions, inputs and results on Grok for training and fine-tuning purposes. This also means that your interactions, inputs and results may be shared with our service provider xAI for these purposes. Learn more
Users can turn it off, but they must do so on the website as the setting isn’t available in the X app. This option will also be available for mobile devices.
To turn off the setting, follow these steps:
Open X in a web browser on your Mac or PC and log in. Click “Advanced.” Click “Settings and Privacy.” Click “Privacy and Safety.” Click “Grok.” Uncheck the box that says “Allow Grok posts, interactions, typing, and results to be used for training and fine-tuning.”
Many X users are unhappy about opting in to data collection. The social site changed the wording about Grok in its help center, going from previous language saying “user interactions, inputs, and results” are used to train Grok to now including user posts.
From the X Help Center:
To continually improve your experience, we may use your X posts and user interactions, inputs and results on Grok for training and fine-tuning purposes. This also means that when you interact with Grok, your interactions, inputs and results may be used to train and enhance the performance of the system. This enables us to:
Deepen Grok’s understanding of human language and communication. Improve Grok’s ability to provide accurate, relevant, and engaging responses. Cultivate Grok’s sense of humor and wit, making interactions more enjoyable. Ensure Grok provides politically unbiased and balanced answers.
