The idea behind blocking someone on social media is that you won’t be able to see or respond to either of their posts, regardless of who initiated the attack on the other person first. This may be changing in the near future on X (formerly Twitter), according to a post by owner Elon Musk.
Musk responded by saying, “The block feature blocks the account from engaging with public posts, but does not block them from viewing public posts.” This feels pretty counterintuitive and defeats half the purpose of blocking in the first place. That said, it’s typical of Musk to say this, given what he’s said publicly about this feature for X before.
It’s about time this happened.
The block feature blocks the account from participating in public posts, but does not block them from viewing public posts.

Incidentally, Musk said last year that he thought the idea of blocking people on social media was pointless, and it was a feature he was considering removing, with the sole exception of DMs. At the time, he also said that the feature would be replaced with a more powerful mute feature.
When this change to blocking goes into effect, blocking will effectively mute the account rather than the post or its thread. While it doesn’t remove the blocking ability entirely, it does seem like we’re one step closer.
