DUBAI – The ICC on Tuesday confirmed that the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, originally scheduled to be held in Bangladesh in October this year, will be moved to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The decision comes in the wake of political unrest in Bangladesh, including the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, making it difficult for the ICC to go ahead with its original plans.
Despite the change of venue, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will retain the hosting rights. The tournament, currently scheduled to be played from October 3 to 20, will be held in two major venues in the UAE – Dubai and Sharjah.
“We are disappointed that we cannot host the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. We know the BCB could have put on a memorable event,” ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice said. “However, travel advisories from participating governments meant that this was not possible. We thank the BCB for their efforts and look forward to hosting an ICC event in Bangladesh in the near future.”
Allardice also expressed his gratitude to the Emirates Cricket Board (BCB) for undertaking to host the tournament on its behalf. He thanked Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their offers of support and said the countries will host ICC international tournaments in 2026. The UAE, home to the ICC headquarters, has emerged as a major cricket hub in recent years, hosting several major tournaments, including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021.
