Amid the bloody mayhem of his campaign rally on Saturday, Donald Trump felt the need to urge his supporters to “fight, fight, fight” to remind them of the MAGA mission that got him to the White House in 2020 and will see him back there again in November.
During an interview with CNBC’s Joe Kernan, co-host of Squawk Box, President Trump spoke for the first time Sunday about his iconic fist-pumping moment after the mass shooting.
“He felt it was essential to get the message out at that time that we would continue to fight to make America great,” Kernen wrote in a post on X after the interview.
Kernen also said Trump was lucky to turn his head at the exact right moment to avoid a more serious, potentially fatal, blow. The conservative host, who is also a personal friend of Trump, said the former president had “a little bit of a problem with his right ear,” but was “lucky that he turned his head at the last moment.”
Is anyone else stunned after the assassination attempt at the Trump rally?
The Squawk Box host declined to say whether he had received details from the former president about the exact extent of his injuries. Neither Trump nor the medical professionals treating him have released any details about the nature of the Republican leader’s injuries at the rally, where a 20-year-old gunman opened fire on the president, killing one person and critically wounding two others in the crowd.
It was unclear whether the bullet struck or grazed Trump, or what exactly caused blood to pool in his right ear and streaks down his face.
“He was in amazing spirits,” Kernen tweeted after speaking by phone with the former president, who is set to formally accept the Republican presidential nomination this week, just days after the shooting at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
Karnen was one of 54 prominent people on Trump’s personal contact list revealed during his hush money trial in Manhattan.
Curnen also said the president was “pleased with all the encouragement and support” he had received from leaders of both parties.
