Welcome to a new week of high school sports and the start of the second half of sectional play for WPIAL girls soccer.
At the midway point in Class 3A, section leaders Fox Chapel (7-0-1), Moon (6-1), South Fayette (7-3) and Plum (7-1) are all one game behind.
The toughest test for the top-ranked team will be Monday when Plum hosts Franklin Regional (6-4) in Section 4-3A.
The Mustangs sit atop the division at 6-0, while the Panthers are 5-1 and have won four straight games.
As for the other top teams, Fox Chapel will visit Shaler (4-4-1) in the first section, while Moon will host Chartiers Valley (0-6) in the second section.
Section 3 leader South Fayette enters a tough non-section match against 4A Upper St. Clair (6-1-2).
First attempt at gold medal
Weather permitting, the area’s top girls golfers will gather at Willowbrook Country Club in Apollo to compete in the first round of the 2024 WPIAL Class 3A and 2A Girls Individual Golf Championships.
There will be 29 participants in 3A and 17 in 2A.
In the 3A finals, seven groups of three and two groups of four will tee off at 8 a.m.
In 2A, there will be five groups of three golfers and one group of two golfers starting at 9:12 a.m.
Elizabeth Forward junior Mya Morgan is the defending 3A champion and is in the first group, teeing off at 8 a.m.
There will be a new 2A champion when 2023 winner Sophia Covelli of Neshannock graduates.
The final round of the 3A and 2A girls individual golf championships will be held Sept. 30 at Butler Country Club.
First putt to gold
While both the 3A and 2A girls championships will be held on the same day, only the boys 2A qualifiers will take to the course on Monday for the opening round of the 2024 WPIAL boys individual golf championship.
Youghiogheny Country Club in Elizabeth Township will host the first round of the championship, featuring 37 golfers.
There will be seven groups of four and three groups of three, with the first group teeing off at 9am.
Last year’s winner was Niksen Erdery of Fraser, but he has since graduated, meaning a new winner will be crowned this fall.
The final round of the 2A Boys Individual Golf Championship will be held Oct. 2 at Sewickley Heights Golf Club.
