Southampton manager Russell Martin is eager to see his team continue to improve in 2024-25 after their dramatic penalty shootout win over Everton in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
Ahead of Saturday’s Premier League game against Ipswich – also promoted to the top flight – Martin will be keen to focus on the positives from Southampton’s start to the season.
“I’m confident that we will get better and continue to improve. The more time the players spend together, the better they will get,” he said. “That’s what we’ve done as a management team in five years.”
“Last season there was a lot more change. We were trying to get the players to do something completely different. A lot of the players understand that now, but we still had a lot of new players coming in.”
“Then adapting to the Premier League has also been an interesting learning for us. Certain elements that were very effective in the Championship might not be as effective against certain opponents in the Premier League.”
“We are finding our rhythm, as are the players. The players are enjoying trying things out on the training ground and figuring things out for themselves, so they are a big part of it.”
“We’re going to continue to learn and we’re going to continue to adapt, but that’s going to continue to be our attitude. I told the guys that on Tuesday.”
