“Coraline” is celebrating the 15th anniversary of the animated film in more ways than one with a lavish birthday party. The 2009 film was the first stop-motion animated feature from Hillsborough’s Laika Studios and tells the eerie story of 11-year-old Coraline (voiced by Dakota Fanning) who discovers that the alternate world she discovers is not as ideal as it seems.
Part of the excitement surrounding the 15th anniversary of “Coraline” includes “Coraline’s Curious Cat Trail,” an installation of 30 artist-decorated cat statues being placed around Portland.

Additionally, “Coraline” will be re-released in theaters in a newly remastered 3D format in limited release starting August 15.
Another 15th anniversary event was a contest, in which Laika asked fans to “record a video of themselves recreating their favorite scene from Coraline in live action and post it to Instagram, YouTube, or TikTok with the hashtag #Coraline15Contest and tag @laikastudios.”

The winning video, produced and directed by Brittany Thurman, features a blue-haired heroine making a disturbing discovery, and won Thurman the competition’s top prize: a Scottish terrier doll from the film.
