UAE Team Emirates has claimed their 75th win of the season in the Super 8 Classic, with Filippo Baroncini making a solo attack in the final kilometres to claim their second win of the day.
The breakaway that day consisted of five riders: Loic Vliegen, Julius van den Berg, Anders Johannesen, Lars Klops and Kay de Bruycke. The group of five riders was not able to make much of a difference and it took a lot of effort to hold back the group that had exploded early on.
A few attacks started to split the pack but the real action came with 35km to go when Tim Wellens put the UAE Team Emirates under pressure, causing favourites such as Jasper Philipsen and Caleb Ewan to drop out of an increasingly thin pack.
A group of about 15 riders remained at the front, including classics specialists, punchers and a few sprinters. With 14km to go, the UAE took advantage of the two riders at the front and attacked on the turn, with Filippo Baroncini launching a powerful attack that was unchallenged.
The Italian quickly built up a big gap as the chasing group struggled to gel on the flat roads. After Juan Ayuso’s win at the Tour de Luxembourg today, the Italian finished alone in the Belgian classic to take second place for the day. Rick Pluimers moved into second place for the day, while Rui Oliveira consolidated the podium for the UAE.
