The United Arab Emirates has confirmed an attack on its ambassador’s residence in Khartoum by Sudanese military aircraft.
Salem Jaberi, UAE Minister of Security and Military Affairs, said in a statement that the attack caused extensive damage to the building housing the UAE’s ambassador.
Jaberi said the UAE had invited UN experts to assess the damage caused by the attack, which he described as heinous.
“This attack is a clear violation of the fundamental principle of the inviolability of diplomatic facilities and of international customs and norms, in particular the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations,” he said. His Excellency highlighted the existence of photographs and evidence that irrefutably prove that the Ambassador’s residence was targeted, thereby undermining the false narrative promoted by the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Sudanese Armed Forces. โ
The UAE noted that the Sudanese Armed Forces persistently seek to evade legal and moral responsibility for the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Sudan resulting from this conflict.
The country added that this action misleads the international community and diverts attention from the suffering of Sudanese people, while avoiding the obligations imposed by international efforts to end the conflict.
Sudan’s military denied the accusations, saying the action was carried out by a paramilitary rapid support force.
In April last year, war broke out between the Sudanese military and the RSF over the transition to free elections.
The United Nations later claimed that nearly 25 million people, half of Sudan’s population, were in need of aid, adding that famine was looming and about 8 million people had been forced to flee their homes.
