ABU DHABI: In a significant milestone, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become the first to perform a robotic kidney transplant using a single robot on both the donor and recipient simultaneously.
The groundbreaking surgery was carried out by Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, part of the M42 Group, in collaboration with a team of experts from Cleveland Clinic in the US.
The achievement demonstrates the Department of Health’s (DoH) ongoing efforts in the field of organ transplantation by combining best practices, science and technology, and highlights the city’s potential to become a global healthcare hub, the Abu Dhabi Media Office (ADMO) reported on Tuesday (August 20).
The procedure involved two UAE nationals, related to the donor and recipient, who was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease, and was led by Dr George Haber, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.
The surgical team worked in coordination with the transplant team, performing the procedures simultaneously in separate operating rooms using a single robot to ensure precision.
Minimally invasive techniques offer many advantages, including less trauma, less blood loss, and faster recovery.
Dr Rashid Obaid Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the Department of Health Abu Dhabi, congratulated this milestone in organ transplantation, highlighting the outstanding healthcare workforce in the Emirate.
