Today, July 18, marks a landmark day in the country’s history, as a pivotal conference took place that laid the foundation for the establishment of the UAE Federation on December 2, 1971. The country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed, and other Emirati rulers announced the official name of the UAE, as well as signing the Federal Proclamation and the UAE Constitution.
And to mark the occasion, President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed declared July 18 as Federal Commitment Day, adding that Federal Commitment Day is an opportunity to commemorate the nation’s journey and draw lessons and morals for the present and future.
The president made the announcement on social media.
“On this day in 1971, our Founding Fathers and their brother rulers signed the Declaration of Union and the UAE Constitution, and announced the name of our country as the United Arab Emirates. It was a historic day as they laid the foundations of our union in preparation for the establishment of our statehood on December 2. Today, we proclaim July 18 as Covenant of Union Day, a national occasion celebrating the history of our nation and our blessed journey towards the establishment of our union.”
Federal Pledge Day is the UAE’s fourth national event after Federation Day, Flag Day and Memorial Day.
The Unity Pledge Day aims to promote the national values and principles established by the late Sheikh Zayed and other rulers on which the nation’s journey is based. The day also aims to raise awareness among the youth about the country’s history and the sacrifices and efforts made to achieve this historic unity.
