The service takes 14 days and customers will be notified of the outcome of their request immediately upon completion. Customers can track their requests through the Ministry’s website (mohre.gov.ae), smart application (MOHRE UAE) and call centre (600590000).
Article 50 of the Federal Decree on the Regulation of Labour Relations states that if a foreign worker quits his/her job for illegal reasons before the end of the contract period, he/she will not be issued a work permit to take up another job in the UAE for one year from the date of quitting. Other employers who are aware of this cannot hire or continue to employ the worker during that period. The Ministry may exempt some occupations, skill levels or workers from the provisions of paragraph 1 of this article.
The MoHRE has also decided on a mechanism for submitting workers’ opinions and grievances.
The process begins with both contracting parties contacting the Ministry by telephone within 14 days to investigate the complaint. The Ministry will then take one of three actions:
1. The Ministry will issue a final settlement offer between the parties, regardless of the amount of the claim.
2. If the amount of the claim does not exceed AED 50,000 or the dispute is about non-compliance with a settlement decision, the Ministry will make a final decision on the complaint.
3. In cases where the amount of the claim exceeds 50,000 dirhams, if an amicable settlement is not possible, the Ministry shall refer the complaint to a judicial body.
The MoHRE noted that requirements for filing a labour complaint include the employee’s work permit number/passport number, while establishments must provide their establishment number and uniform number (in case of employers of support workers).
The ministry provides three channels through which private sector workers, employers and domestic workers can lodge complaints: the ministry’s website, smart application and call centre for labour complaints (80084).
