The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced on Friday the launch of a national relief campaign to assist Lebanon, starting with the dispatch of a medical relief plane.
The move follows instructions from President Mohammed bin Zayed, who approved a $100 million emergency humanitarian aid package for Lebanon, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.
Under the “UAE stands with Lebanon” campaign, the first plane landed at Beirut airport on Friday carrying 40 tons of emergency medical supplies.
The delivery was made in collaboration with the World Health Organization.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the aid operation reflects the UAE’s commitment to supporting the Lebanese people and highlights the deep brotherly ties between the two countries at this time of crisis.
Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashimi, Minister of State for International Cooperation, said the first aid marks the beginning of the UAE’s response to the urgent needs of the Lebanese people.
He emphasized that the UAE remains committed to providing humanitarian assistance to alleviate suffering and meet urgent needs, especially for the most vulnerable populations.
Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in cross-border hostilities since Israel launched a war in the Gaza Strip on October 7 last year. The conflict has left more than 41,800 victims, most of them women and children.
Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon have killed at least 2,011 people, injured more than 9,500 and displaced 1.2 million, according to Lebanese authorities.
The international community has expressed concern that continued Israeli attacks in Lebanon could escalate the Gaza conflict into a broader regional war.
