The United Arab Emirates said early Monday that its ambassador’s residence in Khartoum had been attacked by Sudanese military aircraft, condemning it as a “heinous attack.”
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the attack on the ambassador’s residence caused extensive damage to the building. Sudan’s military had no immediate comment on the accusations.
Sudan’s military has repeatedly accused the UAE of providing arms and support to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia during Sudan’s 17-month civil war. Gulf countries deny the allegations. United Nations sanctions monitors say it is a credible accusation that the UAE provided military support to the RSF.
War broke out between Sudan’s military and the RSF in April last year over the transition to free elections. The United Nations says nearly 25 million people, half of Sudan’s population, are in need of aid, facing famine and about 8 million people have been forced to flee their homes.
โThe ministry emphasized the importance of protecting diplomatic facilities and the residences of embassy personnel in accordance with treaties and customs regulating diplomatic relations,โ the UAE statement added.
