Michigan has a lot of unique things that people take for granted. The Great Lakes are an obvious thing that we Michiganders take pride in. Traveling up north and enjoying all that the Upper Peninsula has to offer is also a big source of pride. But unless you’re from Michigan, very few people realize that the Upper Peninsula is part of our state.

The UP has often fallen off the map, most recently when asked about Michigan on FOX’s game show “The Floor,” so when someone asked on X (formerly Twitter) what the heck was going on in the UP, Michiganders showed up in droves to inform them (and poke fun at them at the same time).
“What’s going on here?”
This was a question tweeted by X-user eleanor/@dimestorepaglia yesterday, garnering nearly 600 replies of varying degrees of seriousness. While her tweet was mostly tongue-in-cheek, it was among the replies that the real jokers were:
User @dennismacelroy started the conversation by saying, “Lots of yopins,” an accurate description that only we can understand. Other users tried to keep the greatness of UP a secret, with responses like, “Shhh,” and “Actually, it’s none of your business.”
From there, it was fun to see how people chose to highlight different aspects of the UP: one user said, “camping and little lakeside towns,” another said, “mosquitoes, blueberries, and cold water,” and yet another simply said, “Moonlit Escanaba” (IYKYK).
But this exchange was perhaps the most sarcastic of all.
Getting a random user on the internet to ask what a pasty is (probably pronouncing it incorrectly in her head) is a huge success, even if she leaves this thread more confused than when she started. Just reading about pasties is making me hungry…
Thank you Eleanor. I hope the answers to your questions were helpful. If you haven’t yet figured out UP, here are some hidden gems to check out.

Own a piece of Michigan history – Eight early 1900s mansions are for sale in the Upper Peninsula for $3.3 million
This is not your average three bedroom, two bathroom estate property.
Eight historic mansions in “copper country” in Calment, UP are on the market for $3.3 million. Currently operating as a bed and breakfast, Larium Manor, the homes were built in the early 1900s, a time when copper miners were becoming millionaires overnight and cost was no object. The homes retain a historic feel throughout, with many moldings and light fixtures, as well as special custom touches like stained glass and multiple fireplaces.
