Hurricane Milton battered the Tampa Bay area with high winds and heavy rain after making landfall Wednesday night. Weather sensors installed at the public beach on Anna Maria Island, near the mouth of Tampa Bay, reported winds reaching 84 mph, with gusts reaching 166 mph at 10 p.m. ET, the Tampa Bay Weather Bureau said. Destructive winds damaged the roof of St. Petersburg’s Tropicana Field, home of MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays. Authorities turned the baseball field into a base camp for emergency responders, lining it with green cots.
Earlier this week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the stadium would serve as a 10,000-person base camp for debris removal efforts and first responders. Footage from local television stations and photos shared on social media showed part of the stadium’s roof ripped off by strong winds.
St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue Services told ABC News that authorities contacted people inside the stadium to ensure they were safe. WFTS-TV reported that no one was injured.
