The Boston Red Sox were very active in the free agent market last winter.
Boston had been rumored to be linked to several players but was trying to make moves without spending a lot of money, the Red Sox were looking to make another big move with the acquisition of Lucas Giolito, and Boston was one of the most talked about teams in the race to acquire Jordan Montgomery.
Montgomery had three straight impressive seasons, winning a World Series with the Texas Rangers last fall. He was one of the top free agent pitchers and was repeatedly linked with a move to Boston. There was a time when the two sides looked close to reaching an agreement, but it never came to fruition.
He seemed very open to Boston, but according to a conversation between him and Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald, something came up in the discussion that “spoiled” his thinking.
“Returning to Boston for the first time this season, Montgomery acknowledged he was interested in signing with the Red Sox but expressed disappointment with how his free agency was handled by former agent Scott Boras,” Cerullo said.
“I had a Zoom call with (the Red Sox) and that’s all I know. It went well,” Montgomery said. “I don’t know. Obviously Boras screwed it up, so I’m just trying to bounce back from the offseason and forget about it.”
Montgomery ultimately didn’t get the contract he wanted and has struggled this season.
