Tim Burton may have changed superhero movies forever with his Batman films, but he has no interest in making another one.
Burton told Variety, explaining that if he were asked to make a new superhero movie, the film’s “they would say no.”
“I look at things from different perspectives,” he added, “so I wouldn’t say never to anything, but at this point, it’s not something I’m interested in.”
Burton said he was “fortunate” to have directed Batman and Batman Returns because “the word ‘franchise’ didn’t exist back then, so Batman felt a bit experimental at the time.” Burton added that he wasn’t even interested in making a Batman sequel in the 1990s, but was “re-energized” by the idea of adding the Penguin and Catwoman to the story.

After two Batman films, Burton nearly directed the third DC film, Superman Rives, which would have starred Nicolas Cage as the Man of Steel. It was never made, but Burton spent a year developing material before Warner Bros. eventually cancelled the project in 1998. (The full story of this sordid saga is chronicled in the documentary The Death of Superman Rives: What Happened?).
Nicolas Cage cameoed as his own Superman in 2023’s The Flash (which also features Burton’s Batman, Michael Keaton, in a supporting role), but Burton wasn’t thrilled with the homage, expressing a “quiet rebellion” in an interview last year about his character’s inclusion in recent DC movies (which may have something to do with his lack of interest in new superhero movies).
Burton’s Beetlejuice is scheduled to hit theaters on September 6th.
Shocking PG-rated movie
These films are full of content that may not be suitable for young children, but they are all PG rated anyway.
