The story of the attempted assassination of President Trump
Video from the scene of the shooting at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday showed the suspect had a clear line of sight to the former president, despite being outside the secured area of the rally.
Gunshots rang out while former President Trump was speaking at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Several people were in attendance at the rally at the time and filming. According to the FBI, the shots were fired by a 20-year-old man from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, about an hour’s drive from the rally. The first gunshot was heard as Trump spoke on stage for just over six minutes, talking about illegal immigration. There were two rapid-fire shots. First three, then five. Three seconds after the first shot rang out, Trump was surrounded by Secret Service agents and hurried off the stage, followed by other heavily armed law enforcement officers. After a brief pause, Trump ordered them to stand still while he got his shoes. “Let me get my shoes. Let me get my shoes. It’s all right, agent. Let me get my shoes on.” When Trump stood up, blood was visible in his right ear. He stopped again before being rushed off the stage, pumping his fist in the air and appearing to mouth the word “fight.” The former president was on stage at this location. Shortly after the first shots were heard, a video was found of a suspect shot dead on the roof of the building. The building is the closest building outside the security perimeter to the rally, about 400 feet north of where President Trump was standing. The location of the body is likely consistent with the location of the shot, as the wound on President Trump’s ear, facing northwest, is consistent with a shot coming from that location. An audio analysis of the shot by an acoustic expert from Montana State University found that the gunfire reached the stage from about the same distance as the location of the body. A Secret Service spokesman also said that the suspect was killed by a shot fired from an elevated position. Video taken during the rally showed a police sniper on the roof about 400 feet away from the suspect, aiming in his direction, before Trump was shot. Footage recorded after the shooting showed a spectator bleeding from a head wound on the bleachers north of where Trump was standing. According to the Secret Service, one person at the rally was killed and two were seriously injured. The shooting is being investigated as an attempted assassination.
