Who it’s for: Golfers looking for more spin and versatility on greenside shots.
What you need to know: TaylorMade currently offers the Hi-Toe Wedge in five different sole grinds, so golfers looking for a copper finish and a larger impact area on open-face shots can also find the sole grind that suits the conditions they typically face.
Dig Deeper: There was a time when extremely high-toe wedges were rare and considered a novelty, but those days are long gone. Over the past few seasons, many of golf’s elite players have added a higher-toe wedge (or two) to their bag for specialized conditions, and recreational golfers have embraced the higher-toe wedge as well.
TaylorMade introduced its first Milled Grind Hi-Toe wedge in 2018 and has updated it regularly since, and with the release of its fourth-generation Hi-Toe wedge, the Carlsbad, California-based equipment manufacturer is combining the design benefits of its Hi-Toe wedge with more sole grind than ever before.
For many golfers, the benefit and appeal of a high toe wedge is the ability to open the face and slide the leading edge under the ball while still utilizing the extra area of the striking surface. This wedge inspires confidence, and with 20 grooves covering the striking surface from heel to toe, TaylorMade believes it can give players of all levels more options and shots around the green.
Each Hi-Toe 4 wedge is cast using soft 8620 carbon steel and finished with an aged copper finish that will age and patina over time; however, the striking area is not chrome plated or finished, leaving the raw steel exposed. Over time and exposure to water and air, the face will rust and take on the natural anti-reflective color preferred by many golfers. On the 56-, 58- and 60-degree wedges, the grooves extend across the entire striking area, while on the 50- and 52-degree Gap wedges, the grooves do not extend to the ends of the heel and toe areas to give the striking area a more iron-like appearance.
TaylorMade added a new laser-etched SpinTrend microgroove pattern between the main grooves. In dry conditions, SpinTrend is less effective, but in wet conditions, it provides more areas to remove water from the hitting area, improving spin consistency.
The Hi-Toe 4 Gap Wedge, Sand Wedge and Lob Wedge each feature a hollowed out area low behind the heel and mass relocated higher behind the toe, shifting the location of the Center of Gravity (CG) upwards, allowing golfers to hit lower, more accurate shots for greater distance control.
The most significant update to the fourth generation of TaylorMade Hi-Toe wedges is that they are now available in five different sole grinds, allowing golfers to find the wedge that better suits their playing style and the conditions they face.
ATS Grind: This is our standard all-terrain grind, a versatile design for use in a variety of conditions. The ATS Grind is available in lofts from 50 to 60 degrees.
ATV Grind: This sole profile has been in TaylorMade’s lineup for the past few years. With a concave sole and asymmetrical bounce, it’s ideal for players with a shallower swing or golfers who play in firmer conditions, while still measuring 11 degrees of bounce. The ATV Grind is available in lofts ranging from 56 degrees to 60 degrees.
ATX Grind: This is a new grind from TaylorMade that features a wide design with three distinct zones. The leading edge is beveled, followed by a flat middle and an aggressive trailing edge. The wedge sole and 12 degrees of bounce make it ideal in the bunker but also incredibly useful on the fairway. The ATX Grind is available in lofts from 56 degrees to 60 degrees.
ATC Grind: This is a classic C-Grind wedge with a fair amount of heel and toe relief. The sole is narrow and the ATC only has 8 degrees of bounce, making it more suited to experienced players playing in firm conditions. The ATC Grind is available in 58 and 60 degree versions.
ATW Grind: ATW stands for All-Terrain, and this wedge has the widest sole of the Hi-Toe 4. With 14 degrees of bounce, this wedge is the most forgiving wedge in the family, designed to handle soft grass, fluffy sand and thick greenside rough. The ATW Grind is available in lofts from 56 to 60 degrees.
