The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has claimed that Sudanese forces attacked its ambassador’s residence in a “heinous attack”, a charge the military denies.
Extensive damage was caused to homes in Sudan’s capital Khartoum, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement early Monday.
The ministry also “stressed the importance of protecting diplomatic facilities and the residences of embassy personnel in accordance with treaties and customs regulating diplomatic relations.”
Sudan’s military has since denied targeting homes, instead accusing the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group fighting Sudan’s army, of a “shameful and cowardly act.”
The military has previously accused the UAE of funding and arming the RSF.

Sudan’s military said in a statement that it “does not target the headquarters of diplomatic missions, United Nations agencies or volunteer organizations, nor do it use them as military bases to plunder their assets.”
“These heinous and despicable acts are carried out by terrorists and anti-government militias.” [RSF]…We support countries known to the world to do all this,” he added.
This comes after the Sudanese army launched a new offensive on Khartoum last week, leaving at least four civilians dead in the Kalari district in fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF.
RSF forces have been at war with Sudanese forces since April last year after the two countries fought over status ahead of an internationally-backed transition to civilian rule.
The UAE denies supporting the RSF, but sanctions watchdogs say there are credible accusations that it provided military support.
