OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – This weekend, the National Utility Contractors Association held its annual Dozer Day in Sarpy County.
This is an event aimed at teaching and inspiring children of all ages about construction work.
“This is important because we need to ensure that Nebraska’s underground infrastructure is built and maintained,” said NUCA Executive Director Janet Schielhoff. “This includes water, sewer, stormwater systems, and electricity. These young students of all ages have great opportunities to work for underground utility contractors, receive on-the-job training, and advance through the ranks.”
There were many activities that were both visual and experiential.
Participant Jeremiah Preston enjoyed it all.
“We actually have a miniature construction vehicle at home that works just like the real thing,” Preston says.
Since Dozer Day on Saturday, Seelhoff told 6News that at least 1,600 people have shown up, and he expects more on Sunday.
“Last year was our first Dozer Day with a total of 1,800 participants. We’ve already exceeded our participation goal and are really excited,” Seelhoff said.
And if you’re planning on coming to the event next fall, Seelhoff said, be as curious as Preston.
“We want to inspect every machine,” Preston said. “While working on one of them, I had the urge to go inside the machine and check all the hydraulics.”
