Russia and Ukraine exchanged 115 prisoners on Saturday, August 24.
According to Reuters, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) acted as a mediator in all these matters.
This is the first exchange since Ukraine launched a major attack on Russia’s Kursk region on August 6.
The attack is considered the largest foreign attack on Russian territory since World War II.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry said the Russian soldiers involved in the fighting were captured in the Kursk region.
The soldiers are currently in Belarus where they will receive medical treatment and rehabilitation before returning to Russia.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared a photo of Ukrainian prisoners of war embracing each other and draped in the blue and yellow of the country’s flag.
In addition to releasing the photos, President Zelenskyy also expressed his gratitude to Ukrainian military forces for helping to secure the prisoners for the exchange.
Additionally, the UAE confirmed its role in facilitating the exchanges, saying it had so far brokered the release of a total of 1,788 prisoners.
This is the seventh round of talks mediated by the UAE since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
