Relevent Sports has appointed longtime ESPN and F1 executive Sean Bratches as chairman. Bratches worked at ESPN for nearly 30 years, before spending four years in F1 and helping to drive the Netflix hit series Drive To Survive. He has also worked at LIV Golf and is now joining Stephen Ross’s Relevent Sports, a New York-based soccer events and media company. With Bratches on board, Relevent aims to play a bigger role in the broader sports media rights space. Relevent also aims to expand its soccer business into new markets, with a particular focus on bringing more European soccer to the U.S. Relevent has ties to La Liga and worked with UEFA to market its events, as well as partnering with the Premier League to create and run the Premier League Summer Series in the U.S. Bratches will work alongside Relevent CEO Daniel Silman and president Boris Gartner, both SBJ 40 Under 40 honorees. The Financial Times interviewed Bratches about his new role, where he said: “We believe there is huge opportunity for growth in European football outside of its core regions, and we see opportunities to support leagues, teams and federations, particularly in the US, the number one sports media market in the world” (Financial Times, 8/23).
