Corey Comperatore was the victim of the shooting at Donald Trump’s Pennsylvania campaign rally.
Comperatore’s family paid tribute to him in social media posts on Sunday.
Comperatore’s sister said he was protecting his daughters from the gunfire.
The victim of the shooting at former President Donald Trump’s Pennsylvania rally has been identified as a loving father and husband who shielded his family from the gunfire.
Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed while trying to protect his wife and daughters, his family said, adding: “This is a horrific nightmare… our painful reality.”
“The Trump rally in Pennsylvania took the life of my brother, Corey Comperatore. The hatred of one man took the life of the man we loved most. He was a hero protecting his daughters. His wife and daughters survived the unthinkable and unimaginable,” Dawn Comperatore Schafer posted on Facebook. “My brother just turned 50 and still had so much more to experience in life. Hate knows no bounds, love knows no bounds.”
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said he ordered flags flown at half-staff in memory of Comperatore, whose wife called him a “girl dad” during a conversation with the governor.
“Corey attended church every Sunday. Corey loved his community and especially his family. Corey was a huge supporter of the former president and we were thrilled to be with him in the community last night,” Shapiro said at a press conference. “Corey did everything in his power to protect his family at last night’s rally. Corey was our best man. May his memory be blessed.”
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Comperatore was the former chief of the Buffalo Township Fire Department.
Photos and videos showed the shocking moment gunfire erupted as President Trump addressed the crowd at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The FBI identified a 20-year-old man from nearby Bethel Park as the suspect in the shooting, who was shot and killed by Secret Service agents.
Trump later said he had been shot in his right ear and two other rally attendees were seriously injured in what the FBI is investigating as an assassination attempt.
