The Ravens have one of the deepest roster depths in the NFL and don’t have much room for undrafted rookies or bubble players on the 53-man roster that will compete for a Super Bowl title. The AFC championship favorites will return to the Under Armour Performance Center on Monday to prepare to whittle down their roster to the number they need before Tuesday’s deadline, when they will begin preparations for the season opener at Kansas City.
A practice squad of 16 players will be formed within the next few hours.
Recent practice squad shakeups have allowed general manager Eric DeCosta to utilize a farm system of versatile players that he can rotate each week based on injuries, opponents or roster manipulation.
Of the 16 players allowed on Baltimore’s practice squad, 10 must be rookies or second-year players, while the remaining six are unrestricted (veterans).
Baltimore boasts a potent offensive line that includes an MVP quarterback, a future Hall of Fame running back and a dynamic second-year pass-catcher to anchor an improving passing attack under offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Owen Wright was a force in the running game in the preseason opener and looked to have secured a spot before breaking his foot in Saturday’s preseason finale.
Defensively, first-year coordinator Zach Orr leads a physical and versatile group featuring Justin Madubuike, Kyle Van Noy, Kyle Hamilton, Marcus Williams, Marlon Humphrey and Brandon Stevens. Rookie cornerback Nate Wiggins adds dynamic athleticism to the rotation.
With roster cuts fast approaching, here are our projections for the 16-man practice squad.
