Whether you’re weathering an industry strike or experiencing a natural downturn in auditions, it’s easy to feel discouraged or complacent when the entertainment industry slows down.
That being said, now may be the perfect time to build momentum in your personal career. When work doesn’t come, it’s time to go to work. (Please note: If an industry strike occurs, this does not mean crossing the picket line or finding loopholes for the strike. While supporting trade unions and trade union friends, this does not mean crossing picket lines or finding loopholes for strikes. (You can work towards becoming a more marketable artist.)
How can you increase your personal momentum when you find yourself in an external downturn? Here are some options.
take a new acting class
When you can’t produce as much acting content as usual, it can be a great time to absorb. Sharpen your acting skills and stay prepared by taking new acting classes, trying out new studios, and practicing new (and old) skills.
Workshop with peers
If you lack funds or opportunities for classes, create a learning environment. Bring material you’re passionate about and workshop it with your fellow actors. Not only will you continue to hone your skill set, but you will also take the time to rediscover your love for the craft and find inspiration to move forward.
Revamp your online presence
Do you have a website that you haven’t updated for months? Now is the time! Double-check your cast breakdown profile and make sure everything is up to date and looking sharp. Attract the kind of work and professionalism you desire.
write about yourself
If you keep staring at dreams that never came true because you were too busy, it’s time to reevaluate your dreams. Create content. Even if nothing comes of it, the act of writing and creating is beneficial and energizing.
keep applying for projects
Even if you feel like the game is slow, keep playing the numbers game. You can’t control the industry, but you can control yourself. Keep updating your resume and headshot and submitting to as many projects as possible.
If you keep building internal momentum, you’ll be ready to take action when the time comes. Just because you’re slow to book doesn’t mean you need to slow your career rise. You can always work on yourself.
