Ninoy Aquino Day is a national holiday in the Philippines, celebrated annually on August 21 to commemorate the assassination of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., a staunch opposition leader and critic of then-President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., father of the current Philippine president.
Aquino’s wife, Corazon Aquino, later became the 11th President of the Philippines, and their son, Noynoy Aquino, became the 15th President. Ninoy was assassinated on the runway of Manila International Airport on August 21, 1983, and the airport was later named Ninoy Aquino International Airport in his honor.
But this year, President Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr. moved the Ninoy Aquino Day celebration from Aug. 21 to Aug. 23 “to create a longer weekend to boost domestic tourism” since Aug. 26 (Monday) is another national holiday, National Heroes Day.
