LOS ANGELES — When an article about NFL star Aaron Hernandez took the world by storm in 2013, the media went crazy. Now, Ryan Murphy’s American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez delves into the story that shocked football fans across the country.
On the Red Carpet spoke to Patrick Schwarzenegger and Norbert Leo Butz about the series’ characters and their approach to portraying the famous players involved in the case.
Schwarzenegger will play Tim Tebow, a former NFL quarterback who played with Hernandez for the Gators at the University of Florida.
“When you hear the name Tim Tebow, it’s either football or faith, and I think both are very relevant to this story,” he said.
When it came to researching the role, Schwarzenegger did his best, saying, “A lot of my research was about who Tim is as a person, so I read his books and listened to his voice a lot.” “A lot.” She even took voice lessons to be able to play the role!
As a football fan, Schwarzenegger found Tebow’s backstory interesting, saying, “Where he came from, the circumstances when he was born and when he wasn’t supposed to live, and how that influenced his faith and his… How it impacted my life… there was so much more to it than I knew as an average fan.”
Butts felt the same way when delving a little deeper into his character’s backstory. He plays Bill Belichick, the former head coach of the New England Patriots, who is introduced in episode 4, “Birthday Money.”
“That’s the greatest thing we get to do. We get to really dig into people who are especially iconic, right? People think they really know. They watch the press conference and actually know, “Oh, who do I know?” ‘And when you dig a little deeper, you find more dimensions, more nuances,’ he explained.
