Ten UAE-supported speech therapy centres have opened across Egypt, providing vital support to 643 young people with disabilities.
The facilities, based in six provinces, were established in cooperation with the UAE’s Zayed Higher Authority and Egypt’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, state news agency Wam reported on Sunday.
ZHO and the ministry agreed in November to work together to revamp Egypt’s network of speech therapy centers and to establish and fund medical convoys to provide care to people with disabilities and their families.
The new centre is equipped with the latest equipment to provide speech therapy sessions, skills development, support for people with learning disabilities, sensory integration and psychological assessments.
A recruitment drive is underway for specialist staff to work in the speech therapy centres, with 20 more centres due to open by the end of the year as part of expansion plans.
The UAE-Egypt project aims to help people with a range of conditions, including autism, speech delay, language disorders, hyperactivity disorder, attention deficit disorder and learning disabilities.
This wide-ranging initiative will include awareness programmes and workshops for people with disabilities and their families and guardians.
Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Ashraf Sobhi, highlighted the important work being done by XHO and the ministry to improve the lives of young people with disabilities and strengthen social inclusion.
Abdullah Al Humaidan, director general of the ZHO, said the opening of the new centre was a positive step towards strengthening the delivery of care in the areas it serves.
ZHO is the umbrella organisation for all humanitarian organisations, social service organisations and institutions working to provide services or improve the situation of people with disabilities in Abu Dhabi.
The organization runs centers and clubs that provide rehabilitation, education, training and counselling to people with disabilities to help them become integrated into society.
