I never expected Dylan Cruz to be promoted this year. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 draft hasn’t really impressed in Double-A and Triple-A, but the Nationals called him up on Monday. I have him at a pretty vague 65th place among outfielders. His .270 minor league batting average probably won’t translate to anything above .230 in the big leagues, but he should be able to steal some bases, and the Nationals seem intent on having him higher in the order on a regular basis.
The Yankees don’t have much to lose in terms of playing time by promoting Jasson Dominguez in September, and I expect they will. Alex Verdugo drops to 86th because he will likely get fewer at-bats as a result. Dominguez is 80th. The Yankees would want to keep him under 130 at-bats to maintain his rookie eligibility in 2025, but they can still adjust for 95 at-bats. The Yankees have 26 games remaining on September 1, and Dominguez will likely start 22 or 23 of those games and fall below that number. The question is whether Aaron Boone is willing to bench Verdugo regularly. My guess is that Dominguez will play, but not as often as most would like.
