The New York Jets opened Week 3 of the 2024 NFL season with a 24-3 win over the New England Patriots on Thursday night.
Entering Week 3, there are nine teams still winless and nine undefeated teams, including the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals. Will that change after this weekend? Notable injuries around the league could play a role.
Will Jordan Love return in Week 3?
The Green Bay Packers quarterback returned to practice on Wednesday, about two weeks after suffering a sprained MCL in the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Love is reportedly expected to miss three to six weeks. He has participated in non-contact training sessions and head coach Matt LaFleur said he will monitor Love’s recovery over the next few days.
“I plan to use him until the 90th minute before kickoff,” LaFleur said.
LaFleur indicated Friday that Love is questionable for Sunday.
Sean Clifford was promoted from the practice squad and will again serve as the backup to Malik Willis if Love is unable to play.
49ers suffer major injury
The San Francisco 49ers are already without running back Christian McCaffrey and receiver Deebo Samuel, but tight end George Kittle will also be sidelined with a hamstring strain. Kittle will be the 49ers’ latest player to miss Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Cornerback Charvarius Ward also did not practice and was placed on San Francisco’s injured list with hamstring and knee issues. Ward has not missed a game since joining the 49ers in 2023.
Texans running back Joe Mixon will miss game against the Vikings
Houston running back Joe Mixon will not play in Sunday’s game against Minnesota, which is 2-0, after suffering an ankle injury on a play that resulted in a hip-drop tackle that should have been a foul against Chicago in Week 2. According to ESPN’s DJ Bien Aime, Mixon did not practice this week.
The NFL announced Saturday that Bears linebacker TJ Edwards was fined $16,883 for his hip-drop tackle on Mixon.
Seahawks’ Kenneth Walker III is questionable
Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III has been sidelined with an oblique injury. He missed the team’s Week 2 game against the Patriots and is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins.
If Walker is unable to play, Zach Charbonnet, who rushed 14 times for 38 yards and a touchdown, will likely return to the starting lineup.
Brown officially decommitted from Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown will officially miss Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints, according to the Eagles’ injury report released on Friday. Brown told ESPN’s Lisa Salters on Monday that he will miss “several weeks” with a hamstring injury.
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni initially did not say Friday that Brown, a receiver, would miss the game despite missing practice this week.
“We still have time, we’ll see how it goes today,” Sirianni said Friday. “We’ve got today, we’ve got a little bit tomorrow and, of course, we’ve got Sunday before we make a decision.”
However, Philadelphia opted to rest the 27-year-old receiver later in the day.
Brown first appeared on the Eagles’ injured list last Friday after straining his hamstring during practice. He then missed Saturday’s practice and the team officially ruled him out for Monday night’s game at Philadelphia on Sunday.
Russell Wilson in doubt for Steelers
Quarterback Russell Wilson is expected to miss his third straight game and is listed as questionable on the Steelers’ injured list with a calf injury, with Justin Fields expected to return in his place.
Fields completed 70 percent of his passes (30-of-43) for 273 yards and a touchdown to help Pittsburgh get off to a 2-0 start and also rushed 22 times for 84 yards.
