New York Times columnist David French said he plans to vote for Vice President Harris in November’s election because he wants to “protect conservatism.”
French described himself as a pro-lifer and supporter of the landmark Dobbs decision, and argued that Donald Trump and the “MAGA movement” were moving the Republican Party away from “Reaganite conservatism”.
French, an “evangelical conservative” according to his author page, wrote in the column that a Democratic victory is the only way conservatives can rebuild the Republican Party.
“A Harris victory would still see the West standing up to President Vladimir Putin, and conservative Americans would have a chance to build something decent from the ruins of a party that was once a force for real good in American lives,” he argued.

He cited lies, political violence and threats of violence as reasons for not voting for the Republican candidate.
“For a party that often imagines itself as a stronghold of religious people, let’s take an indisputable claim: lying is wrong. I’m not naive. I know that since Athens, politicians have had a bad reputation for honesty. But I have never seen anyone lie as vehemently and prolifically as Donald Trump,” French wrote.
French argued that voting Democrat was the best way to “stand up to violent Russian aggression.”
“For example, how many Republicans predicted that the best way to counter violent Russian aggression was to vote Democrat and that the Republican Party would succumb to Russian aggression? In many ways, the most concrete conservative action I can take in this election is to vote for a candidate who will challenge President Vladimir Putin. By voting for a lesser candidate and a pro-life politician, I can help stop federal liberalization of abortion laws. But if the president decides to abandon Ukraine and cripple NATO, there is little anyone can do,” he said.

He said Trump’s “cruelty” is “deeply rooted” among conservative evangelicals.
“The only real hope for restoring a conservatism that values integrity, shows genuine compassion, and defends our fundamental constitutional principles does not lie in trying to get the best of a self-centered Trump,” he wrote.

He also said that Trump’s victory only legitimizes “his cruelty” and the transformation of the Republican Party.
