Not every movie needs a sequel. As much as I loved The Platform when it arrived on Netflix in early 2020, this sci-fi thriller felt like a typical “one-and-done” movie. When a sequel was later announced, I had mixed feelings.
Time passed and “The Platform 2” appeared on Netflix. I went back to the pit myself (PS: I decided to watch it while eating breakfast. I don’t recommend it). I’m very happy to be able to say this. The Platform 2 smartly builds on its predecessor and delivers exactly what I wanted from a sequel.
Despite some flaws, such as an overly vague third act, The Platform 2 is destined to become a cult favorite and a true gem in Netflix’s ever-growing international film library. The menu has a lot of volume, so I would like to order it again.
‘The Platform 2’ avoided my biggest fear

My biggest fear heading into The Platform 2 was that the movie wouldn’t be able to justify its own existence.
For those looking for a refresher on the first film, “The Platform 2” is once again set inside a 333-story high-rise prison known as The Pit. Every day, a floating platform loaded with food descends through the floor and the inmates have two minutes to stuff their faces with food. The people living on the upper floors enjoy the feast, but the people living on the lower floors live on the remains.
My concern going into this sequel was that “The Platform” had expanded on this very interesting core concept as much as possible. The selfish nature of humanity is observed through the eyes of the first film’s main character, Goren (Ivan Massage), and the prison can be seen from multiple floors (prisoners are randomly moved between levels each month). I didn’t know if there was any road left to drive on. How can The Platform 2 avoid feeling outdated?

In “The Platform 2,” the pit is essentially the same, but instead of the oppressive system changing, it’s the people who have grown. Groups within the prison have begun enforcing a new system in which inmates receive only one item of food from the prison. The platform they requested as they were thrown into the pit.
Those who violate this rule and receive more than their fair share will be subject to swift retribution. The new protagonists, Perempuan (Milena Smit) and Zamiatin (Hovik Kaykerian), are quickly made aware of these “laws” and become enforcers of the rules themselves, making the skeptics of this hellish place more It seeks to promote fair means of subsistence. Prisoners do not obey them.

This moves “The Platform 2” away from the story of a single protagonist fighting to survive within a system that promotes self-preservation, and instead the sequel explores what happens when a group of people come together to make an effort. We can now comment more broadly on what happens. Society as a whole will become better. This slight switch-up keeps The Platform 2 interesting even when you’re exploring the same locations as before.
This sequel is definitely for fans
If you didn’t enjoy “The Platform,” it’s safe to say you won’t like this sequel. Also, if you haven’t seen the first movie, don’t try to watch this one first. “The Platform 2” makes no concessions to new entrants and is designed to be very much a continuation. There are many callbacks and references here.

“The Platform 2” can be pretty gory at times, not to mention extremely brutal, but it’s all in the service of the story. Its critiques of our capitalist society are by no means subtle, but they’re valuable, and viewers pondering the film’s deeper themes will discover everything packed into The Platform 2. You will feel happy about it. Don’t expect to get answers to all your questions. There are still a lot of plot points left unresolved.
Another area where “The Platform 2” shines is in the characters. While the first film focused on The Pit itself and its denizens felt a little thin, the sequel takes extra time to portray the flawed people at the center of the twisting story. I have been able to do that. Not all of the characters are likable, but at least they’re all well represented.

Meanwhile, behind the camera, returning director Gardel Gastel-Urutia does a great job of immersing viewers in this dystopian setting. Of course, the increasingly surreal and bizarre third act will turn off some viewers, but if you can embrace the madness and not take every scene at face value, The Platform 2 It will grab your attention from beginning to end. A bittersweet moment.
You need to stream ‘The Platform 2’ on Netflix
The Platform 2 won’t be everyone’s cup of tea – we’ve already seen early reviews criticizing the film for not having much to say or just being too vague – However, by building on the core story, it managed to impress me with its predecessor while retaining most of what made me love the first one.
Its cruel subject matter and unpleasant aspects (no one can blame you if you get sick over scenes of people stuffing their faces with half-eaten food scraps) will probably make this film the attention of every Netflix subscriber. It means that it is not. However, if the original movie appealed to you, this sequel will satisfy your hunger as well.
If “The Platform 2” isn’t your cup of tea, why not check out the full list of movies and shows coming to Netflix this month, including Anna Kendrick’s new “Woman of the Hour.” It has plenty of thrills like “The Platform 2,” but without the food fights.
