On Tuesday, August 6th at 6pm, Mocksville Town Council members will hold the town’s monthly business meeting.
You can watch it live on the town’s YouTube channel.
The initiative is intended to improve the public’s access to the actions and decisions of elected officials, ensure transparency and encourage community engagement, said Lynn Trivette, town clerk and deputy manager.
The most recent meeting, held on July 2nd, can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/@townofmocksville.
North Carolina requires all towns to have a clerk who maintains local government records, including board minutes, which she said is essential to ensure accountability and preserve history.
โAs Mocksville Town Clerk, I am pleased to share with you the many benefits of recording and sharing your board meetings,โ Trivette said, listing the benefits as follows:
โข Improved public access. Recording meetings allows residents who can’t attend in person to stay informed about the decisions and discussions that shape our community.
โข Reference and accountability. Recorded meetings provide a detailed record that can be referenced for specific details and procedures, promoting transparency and accountability.
โข Improved meeting effectiveness. Watching recorded meetings helps you evaluate the effectiveness and progress of the session. This allows staff to identify areas for improvement, such as tone, pace, attitude and engagement.
โข Reduced misunderstandings. Recording provides a clear and accurate record of discussions and decisions, eliminating confusion and misunderstandings.
โข Increased transparency. Sharing meetings online fosters a culture of openness, building trust and strengthening relationships within the community.
โข Staff training resources. Recorded meetings provide real-world examples of procedures and discussions and can be used as a training resource for new and existing staff.
“We are committed to ensuring our community stays informed and engaged, and by making our board meetings available on YouTube we are taking a big step towards achieving that goal,” Trivette said.
