It’s no secret that the Mets need pitching, especially their bullpen. General manager David Stearns has made efforts to add to his pitching staff, acquiring Phil Mutton before the trade deadline and more recently Ryne Stanek. Stearns has been actively looking to bolster his bullpen, and according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Mets are in the running to acquire Luis Garcia.
The Los Angeles Angels are in selling mode. Other teams interested in Garcia, according to Heyman, include the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals. Garcia is having a strong season with the Angels, appearing in 44 games and pitching 42 2/3 innings with a 3.80 ERA, 18 runs allowed, 40 strikeouts and a 112 ERA+. He also earned three saves with the Angels.
With Brooks Raley and Drew Smith out for the season and Dedniel Nunez, Sean Reid-Foley and Reid Garrett on the disabled list, New York is desperate to bolster its bullpen. Acquiring a pitcher like Garcia would add depth to the late innings. He would join Matton, Stanek, Jose Buto and Edwin Diaz. For now, Stearns is on the phone looking for bullpen bolsters.
