Welcome to the Lynchburg Sports Weekly Blog. Here we summarize past events and provide the latest information to prepare you for the Hornets’ upcoming games. This blog will be published once a week (usually every Thursday) and will provide you with the latest information on Lynchburg athletics.
Lynchburg fans, get ready! This week the Lynchburg team is packed with exciting games across multiple sports as the Hornets take to the field, court, and course. The world’s 11th-ranked field hockey team will look to win against No. 8 York, while the women’s volleyball team will look to build on an impressive winning streak in D.C. The men’s soccer team will continue its three-game winning streak and the equestrian team will look to We will hold the first dual tournament of the season where we plan to achieve our goal. Plus, we look back at the cross country crews who swept the ODAC RoW Awards, and both swim teams start their season with the ODAC Relays.

After moving up one spot in the Pent/NFHCA poll and after a brief hiatus in its schedule, the No. 11 Lynchburg field hockey team is eager to play. This weekend, the team returns to Pennsylvania for games against No. 8 York and Susquehanna. The match against York should be a heated one. Last season, the Hornets defeated the Spartans twice, once with a 2-0 win in the regular season and once with a 1-0 win in the Round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament. York will certainly be looking to bounce back, but the Hornets are well-rested and ready to pick up their fifth win of the season. Lynchburg will play York on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m., and against Susquehanna on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m.
The Lynchburg girls volleyball team has had its best week of the year over the past seven days. The Hornets played two games, the first on the road against Shenandoah and the latter at home against Randolph. In the first contest last week, Lynchburg won its first sweep of the season in dominant fashion. The Hornets also posted a season-high offensive success percentage of .350 in this contest. In Lynchburg’s only home game of the week, they could take that momentum to Turner Genamism. In back-to-back matches, the Hornets dominated their opponents in three sets. The women’s volleyball team will have a productive weekend with a trip to the capital. The Hornets will play four games this weekend at Gallaudet University against Catholic University, Gallaudet University, Bethel University and Marymount University.
Lynchburg’s boys soccer team is on a three-game winning streak, defeating Catholic and Roanoke last week. Chris Wylie scored a goal in the final 10 minutes against Catholic to earn ODAC Offensive Player of the Week, the men’s soccer team’s first conference award of the year. For the Code Red game against Roanoke, students showed up in red and stayed until the final whistle. It was a back-and-forth battle with the Maroons in the rain, but the Hornets remained undeterred and won 2-1. Lynchburg, which has a 1-0 record against ODAC, continues conference play at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 4:30 p.m., then heads to Danville, Va., on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. to face Averett.
The Lynchburg girls soccer team played two games last week, with the games tied 1-1. This week the Hornets started off against a very strong opponent in the #14 Emory Eagles. Lynchburg was able to claim a 1-0 advantage early in the game, but Emory’s two late goals settled it. Nevertheless, Lynchburg quickly got back to work for another game on the road against a tough opponent in Mary Washington. In this case, the Hornets would be in a defensive situation. Senior defenseman Haley Casey would score her first career goal in the Hornets’ 1-0 victory. Lynchburg will now return to Shellenberger for a three-game homestand, the longest of the season. The next game will be this Saturday, September 28th against Guilford College.
The reigning NCEA Champion Lynchburg Equestrian Team will host its first dual meet of the year this weekend, taking on the likes of College of Charleston and Centenary College on Friday, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 28, respectively. Last weekend, the Hornets made their season debut at the IHSA Tournament of Champions in Westerville, Ohio, earning the best finish in school history. Lynchburg’s Team Red had the Hornets’ best finish thus far in the TOC, finishing sixth as a team. Team Black for Lynchburg finished 9th overall in the event. Ranked No. 1 overall in a single discipline in the NCEA preseason rankings, the Hornets are on track for the 2024-25 season.
Lynchburg’s men’s and women’s swim teams will begin their 2024-25 campaigns this weekend with the ODAC Relays. His ODAC swim relay, hosted by the University of Washington and Lee University, includes many swimming programs within the ODAC and is a great opportunity to showcase team strength early in the season. The event will be held on Saturday, September 28th and will begin at 11am. A link to the live stream of the relay can be found on the swim schedule page at lynchburgsports.com.
Lynchburg’s cross country team swept the ODAC Runner of the Week award after competing in the Adidas XC Challenge and John McNichols Invite this past weekend. Sophomore Kayla Werner had a strong performance at the adidas XC Challenge, setting her ODAC season record of 17:07.6 in the 5k run, earning her 10th place in the event. Junior Chasen Hunt started the 2024 season in 10th place after completing the 8km in a time of 24:37.5 at the John McNichols Invite. Hunt’s time was also his ODAC season’s best performance in the men’s 8k competition. The Hornets continue to build on a strong foundation and continue to grow throughout the season. The next cross country meet is the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh on Saturday, October 5th in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Hornets hope to continue their strong start to the season into their next game heading north.
The Lynchburg girls tennis team had a strong performance last weekend at the ITA Division III Southeast Regional hosted by Mary Washington. Overall, the Hornets finished with a record of 5-2 in singles and 2-3 in doubles. Freshman Kayla Kociolek had a solid performance for the Hornets, going 3-0 in the Blue 3 singles event before having to withdraw in the final round due to stiffness. In singles, Ashley Hare defeated Salisbury’s Elizabeth Corrigan 6-2, 6-0, and in the repechage match, Madison Sked defeated Salisbury’s Katherine Raab 8-2. Lynchburg’s Hare and Kociolek defeated Roanoke’s Julia Bassett and Victoria Rios in a dominant 8-1 effort in the blue doubles repechage bracket. Hare and Kociolek defeated Lebanon Valley’s Katherine Berra and Erica Badner 8-4 in the repechage semifinals. The Hornets ended the 2024 fall season on a strong note with their performance at the ITA Regional. The spring 2025 regular season schedule will be announced at a later date.
Lynchburg’s men’s and women’s golf teams will compete in several tournaments in the coming days. The women’s golf crew tees off this weekend at the Williams Invitational. As the team continues its fall schedule, it will travel to Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Mass., for a weekend event. This will be the second of four contests the team will hold during the fall season. The team previously placed seventh at the Lynn Schweitzer Invitational. The men’s team will then travel to Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, for the Gate City Invitational. This tournament will be the men’s team’s first tournament in fall 2024. After the upcoming road trip, each team has scheduled contests for his early October. The men’s team will head to West Pines Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, to compete in the West Pines Invitational, which will be held from October 7th to 9th. The women’s team will travel to Nemacolin Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania, for the Carnegie Mellon Fall Invitational on October 7th and 8th.
