Joe Gomez has been left out of Liverpool’s squad for their Premier League opener against Ipswich Town as he is considering his option to leave the club before the transfer window closes.
The Reds kicked off the new season at Portman Road on Saturday afternoon, but Gomez did not travel with the team.
The Times reports that his exclusion is the result of “adult discussions” between Liverpool and the defender, who are not actively trying to force him out of the club.
Newcastle United were in talks to sign Gomez earlier in the summer, with Anthony Gordon also being offered to Liverpool in the proposal.
Eddie Howe’s side remain interested in Gomez, with Chelsea also said to be interested in him, along with Aston Villa, Fulham and overseas clubs.
Gomez is considering his future on Merseyside and pondering whether now is the right time to take on a new challenge that would give him the opportunity to play for the first team on a more regular basis.
Manager Arne Slott has named Academy graduate Yarel Quansah in the starting XI alongside Virgil van Dijk for the match against Ipswich, and he has been an increasingly influential presence in defence.

Ibrahima Konate is also a defensive option and was named among today’s reserves.
Liverpool estimated Gomez’s value at £45million during negotiations with Newcastle earlier this summer.
The Magpies then turned their attention to Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi but attempts to sign the Londoner have so far failed, with Palace having rejected four bids for him, with the latest thought to be around £65m.

Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch expressed surprise at Saturday’s developments. “He’s a great guy to have in the team,” he said.
“If you look at the injuries he had last year, guys had to step in and cover for him and he did great himself but it’s probably his decision to move on.”
Liverpool are yet to make any major additions to their squad this summer, with Slott operating with the same squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp.
Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi was the team’s top target this summer but the Spain international rejected a move to Anfield last week.
