Kurt Cobain died by suicide in 1994 when his daughter was 20 months old. In an Instagram post in April, she reflected on the 30th anniversary of his death and shared photos of their time together.
“I wish I had known my dad,” she wrote at the time. “I wanted to know the cadence of his voice, his taste in coffee, how he felt when he unwinded after listening to a bedtime story. During a humid Washington summer, he came with me to catch tadpoles. Or maybe he smelled like camel light and strawberry Nesquik (which I heard were his favorites).
“But there is also a deep wisdom that is on the fast track to understanding how precious life is. He gave me a lesson about death that can only come through the lived experience of losing someone. It’s the gift of knowing for sure that when we love ourselves, and the more those around us treat us with compassion, tolerance, and grace, here we are. Our time becomes inherently more meaningful. ”

She further added that her father wrote her a letter before she was born that ended with the message, “No matter where you go, no matter where I go, I will always be with you.”
“He kept this promise because he exists in many forms,” she said. “When I hear a song or when we hold hands, I get to spend a little time with my dad and I feel like he is transcendent.”
In a 2019 interview on “RuPaul: What’s the Tee?” Cobain said on his podcast that he feels guilty about inheriting money from his father.
“My relationship with money is different because I’m not making money,” she says. “It’s like a big, huge loan that I can never part with. It feels like I got the money from someone I’ve never met, much less earned it myself. Even though I don’t have one, I feel almost no guilt or connection to it.”
