Bobby Placetillo has had a very interesting year (so far).
His previous film, Kiblat, received backlash from Indonesia’s Ulema Council in March because the title was inappropriate for a horror picture, resulting in an apology from the film’s producers. The controversial film, later retitled Sagut and with a new poster, premiered in Indonesian theaters in August.
Now, Bobby is back with another horror film, Kuasa Gerap (full English title is Dominion of Darkness), which may reflect the director’s steely determination. In a conversation with The Jakarta Post on September 25, he admitted that it is still difficult to understand how “fair” past disputes were after all.
“The word ‘fair’ is subjective,” Bobby says. “Still, I can understand how you do it. [the controversy] May cause anger in certain people. For me, that was never the intention. ”
Perhaps in many ways there were greater and more subtle risks in the production of Kuasa Gerap than in the case of Sagut.
Kuasa Gerap, released as the first Indonesian horror film about a Catholic exorcism, stars a Catholic priest and schoolteacher (played by Citra Award winner Jerome Kurnia) and a veteran priest (played by Citra Award winner Jerome Kurnia). The film tells the story of a young priest who has to work with a man (played by Lukman). Sardi) To exorcise a demon that possessed one of the former’s students.
