It was a year in which WWE signed a lot of talented wrestlers, but they also faced challenges in retaining others.
Despite being a top superstar for several years, Becky Lynch has left WWE for an indefinite hiatus with no plans to join another wrestling organization, while her husband, Seth Rollins, continues to work for WWE, while Ricochet has left the company to join AEW.
Meanwhile, WWE has successfully renewed contracts with Drew McIntyre, Seth Rollins, Asuka, Natalya, Humberto Carrillo, Angel Garza and, most recently, Sheamus. The company also needs to negotiate a new deal with Kevin Owens, whose current contract expires in the next few months.
Fightful Select is reporting that WWE has contacted several superstars about contract extensions, marking a shift from the laid-back approach taken earlier this year.
Owens is one of the key players in the contract negotiations, with inside WWE sources confirming that The Prizefighter has been approached about a new contract but nothing has been committed yet.
Owens announced in May that he only has nine months left on his current contract with WWE, and with that deadline fast approaching, WWE is hoping to lock Owens into a deal before other wrestling promotions, particularly AEW, show interest.
AEW has reportedly been keeping an eye on Owens for some time, with sources saying the organization has expressed strong interest in signing the former WWE Universal Champion if he becomes a free agent.
If Owens chooses not to renew his contract with WWE, AEW is expected to make a big offer to bring him onto their team.
As we all know, AEW previously missed out on a chance to sign Owens in 2021.
According to the report, “Kevin Owens has been approached about a new contract. Owens has not yet signed a new deal, but we’ve heard there have been contacts. His contract is set to expire at the end of the year… Sources I spoke to at AEW said the company has always been interested in signing Owens if he was available. They are expected to make him an offer once he becomes a free agent.”
