Kenya’s narco movement leader, Martha Karua, has turned down an invitation to join President William Ruto’s administration as Attorney-General.
The veteran politician, who has been a passionate critic of President William Ruto’s administration, said on Saturday he was not interested in the post.
After receiving support from social media user Peter Kariuki who said “she is the right person”, Ms Kalua replied: “Thanks, not interested”.
Kariuki said in his message of support.
“I support Martha Karua as Attorney General. Her advice is much needed by the government. Martha Karua should assume the position immediately.”
The Narc Kenya leadership has maintained a hard-line stance on its possible participation in the Kenya Kwanzaa government.
She is part of a group of Kenyans who have been calling for the resignation of Kenya’s Kwanzaa government for failing to live up to people’s expectations.
The party’s notice of intent to leave Azimio after four ODM members joined Ruto’s cabinet is the latest sign that he is not willing to work with Ruto.
The party’s intention to break away from Azimio came as a surprise given that in a radio interview on Tuesday she assured him she had a good relationship with ruling coalition leader Raila Odinga.
“We spoke just recently and we will speak again. The phone lines are open,” Kalua said.
Kalua refused to join a government of national unity, instead calling for strengthening the opposition and continuing to pressure the Kwanzaa Kenya government to honour its commitments.
She said Raila’s idea of withdrawing his candidacy for the African Union Commission would be a godsend to support the mission.
“To his credit, he has even said he is ready to give up his AUC candidacy, which means he is now relieved of pressure,” Kalua said in a radio interview.
The ODM members appointed to cabinet are John Mbadi (Treasury), Hassan Joho (Mining and Blue Economy), Wycliffe Oparanyah (Cooperatives and MSME Development) and Opiyo Wandayi (Energy and Petroleum).
