Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s relationship is officially over, once again.
Lopez filed for divorce from the Oscar-winning “Argo” actor and director on Tuesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to legal documents reviewed by The Times. Their two-year anniversary in Nevada is July 17, and the filing date falls on the second anniversary of their wedding in Georgia.
Representatives for Lopez and Affleck did not immediately respond to The Times’ requests for comment.
According to TMZ, which first reported the couple’s split on Tuesday, Lopez has not said whether she and Affleck had a prenuptial agreement.
There have been plenty of signs the couple was heading towards a split in recent months: People magazine reported that the couple were separated on May 17, followed by an “exclusive source” saying on May 22 that their marriage “is not in the best of hands right now.”
Lopez and Affleck’s differing views on life have been noted many times, with a source telling People magazine in May that “Ben hates the attention and is very uncomfortable with it,” and “Jennifer has always had a different approach.” A week into June, TMZ reported that divorce was “imminent” after Affleck-Lopez’s eight-figure mansion and its 24 bathrooms had been quietly put on the market for several weeks. The home had been on the market since July.
Meanwhile, Affleck bought Lopez a $20.5 million Los Angeles home for her 55th birthday late last month, which reportedly could easily be converted into a bachelor pad.
According to People magazine, the pair were on opposite sides of the country over the Independence Day holiday weekend, with Affleck in Los Angeles and her partner in the Hamptons in New York.
Lopez’s ninth and latest album, “This Is Me…Now,” and its companion film, released earlier this year, heavily feature her rekindled relationship with Affleck. The album’s summer tour was canceled before it even began due to sluggish ticket sales and rumors of a deteriorating relationship. Lopez said she was “devastated” by the cancellation. “Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,” her fan newsletter said.
The couple first met on the set of “Giri” in 2002, when Lopez was still married to her second husband, Cris Judd. Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce two days after she was spotted kissing Affleck at a surprise birthday party.
Affleck proposed to her in November 2002 with a $2.5 million pink diamond, but the couple postponed their planned September wedding date due to the media outrage surrounding their relationship. In January, it was reported that “Bennifer” was officially over.
Over the next 18 years, the pair were apart with different partners: Lopez was married to singer Marc Anthony from 2004 to 2014 and was engaged to former New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez from 2019 to 2021, while Affleck was married to Jennifer Garner from 2005 to 2018. The couple, who have three children together, remain friends and co-parent with Lopez, who has twins with Anthony.
But you can’t fight fate or power couple status. Affleck and Lopez were spotted together again in 2021 and announced their engagement for a second time in 2022 after he proposed in a bubble bath with a giant green ring. The two married in Las Vegas later that year and seemed to enjoy embodying early 2000s nostalgia, but divorce rumors began circulating this spring before Lopez canceled her summer tour.
“We had to break up because we’d lost who we were and didn’t know how to get through it,” Lopez told Variety in February about their 2004 split under intense media scrutiny. “I had to figure out myself, and he had to figure out himself.”
Apparently, they’ve finally figured things out together. And the answer is: separately.
