Three Jefferson County men charged with attempted first-degree murder are accused of tying up a housemate, beating her with a crowbar and a baseball bat, setting her on fire and torturing her for 14 hours, according to an arrest affidavit.
Jason Edward Carlson, 49, Sherrell Cortez Allen, 48, and Luke Leonard Anaya, 41, are each charged with 17 counts in connection with the Sept. 16 incident, including attempted murder, assault, kidnapping, false imprisonment and felony intimidation, according to court records.
Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies responded to St. Anthony Hospital on the morning of Sept. 16 after hospital staff called 911 about a patient who reported being tied up and tortured.
Police spoke with a 45-year-old man, who said he had been living at the home in the 4700 block of South Oak Court for several weeks.
According to the affidavit, the man was in his basement bedroom around 2 a.m. on Sept. 15 when he heard Carlson, Allen and Anaya talking about trying to beat him up.
The man tried to crawl out a window but was unable to do so so instead tried to barricade the door.
The man told officers that Carlson, Allen and Anaya broke down the door, shot him with rock salt from an “airsoft-type gun,” then began assaulting him, stomping on his neck hard enough to render him unconscious.
When the man regained consciousness, he was tied to a chair with cable ties and electrical tape, then the three men beat him in the head and knees with a crowbar and a baseball bat, poured rubbing alcohol in his face and set him on fire, among other assaults and torture for 14 hours.
The man was able to escape when two others returned home and told Carlson, Allen and Anaya to stop. Two of them escorted the man out of the house and a third took him to the emergency room and dropped him off.
According to the affidavit, hospital staff reported the man had bruises, burns and broken cartilage on his neck.
Carlson, Allen and Anaya are being held in the Jefferson County Detention Center on bail ranging from $150,000 to $300,000, according to court records.
Carlson and Allen are scheduled to appear in court Oct. 15 for a preliminary hearing, while Anaya is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
