ICC moves 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup from Bangladesh to UAE amid unrest
The International Cricket Council decided on Tuesday, August 20, to move the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates.
The decision comes as civil unrest continues in Bangladesh following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India seeking refuge.
According to BBC Sport, the ICC announced that the tournament will be held at two venues in the UAE, Dubai and Sharjah, from October 3-20.
ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice expressed his disappointment, saying, “It is disappointing that the Women’s T20 World Cup cannot be held in Bangladesh as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have put on a memorable event.”
He further said, “I would like to thank the Bangladesh Football Federation team for taking all possible steps to ensure the event could be held in Bangladesh. However, due to travel advisories issued by many of the participating teams, it was not possible to achieve this.”
“I would also like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for undertaking the organisation on behalf of the BCB,” Jeff added.
Jeff further stated that the BCB will retain the hosting rights and look forward to bringing ICC events to Bangladesh in the future.
